Last December 2024, UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Cate Blanchett visited Brazil to meet with people who were affected by the destructive flooding that happened in several parts of Rio Grande do Sul 2024.
The official account of UNHCR has shared video of Cate thanking donors for their support, and media company, Freeda, shared video of her meeting with refugee women during her visit.
You can follow UNHCR on their social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) for updates and you can also help spread awareness of the plight of refugees by sharing their posts. If you would like to donate, you can follow the link here.
Cate Blanchett is a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador and has traveled to Brazil to meet some refugee women who are rebuilding their lives after the floods that devastated the country in May 2024. The actress sat down with Venezuelan and Haitian women who had previously fled violence and persecution, and who have now had to face a major crisis once again. Ninety-six percent of the state of Rio Grande do Sul was flooded. Entire villages disappeared. Roads, homes, and livelihoods were swept away. Many of these women were forced to start over, again.
But this isn’t just a story of loss. At Freeda, we want to emphasize that these are stories of women rising up. Who transform pain into purpose. Who create support networks. Who sustain their families and communities with courage, creativity, and care. Around the world, women displaced by conflict are also on the front lines of extreme weather events and, too often, are the least protected.
